Belfast sink leak

What's the best way to seal a 1.5in belfast sink waste, mine keeps leaking? Is plumbers putty better that silicone?

What you will probably find is bottom of waste outlet is not level common problem .
We always grind/file them level.
Then largest flat plastic washer you can find we use silicone to seal.

Thanks for your answers but what type of sealant would be okay to bond a plastic washer to the underside of a Belfast sink.
