How about a posh, bucket type tool bag?

I use a couple of these (Stanley hard base open tote) and they're brilliant.

Stanley FatMax® Open Tote Tool Bag#

The only problem is you can't stand on them and that's always useful!

i like..... how practical though? would u need say one of them and a toolbox 'u can stand on'?

I find them very pratical - very easy to see what's in it and easier to carry as it's got a shoulder strap.

As others have already said he'll need more than one tool box in the long run so could always get a normal one to stand on!

I have the bucket (usually from a fittings bundle) always handy incase of dripping water, the above stanly Fat Max Tool Bag and also the Stanly Big tool Box with handle and wheels (like holiday luggage).

My everyday tools go in the Fatmax bag (adjustables, grips, pumps pliers, footprints, saw, etc), my not so often used tools in the big toolbox (club hammer, immersion heater spanner, chinese finger, stillsons, etc) and the bucket is where I stick all my consumables like Solvent Weld, Wet rags, PTFE, Flux, etc.

Hope that helps :)
