Bit of a random question this one*– I've got a 1st floor flat, with a flat upstairs and another below. It's a Georgian building in London. In my living room, oddly, is a pipe that goes from floor to ceiling right next to the chimney breast.

I've checked with the building contractors who are gutting the flat below and they say it doesn't come into their flat. I've checked with the flat upstairs, and he says there's no pipe coming in on that wall, and his water pipe is on the opposite side of the building.

I've had a plumber look at it who reckoned it's maybe an old gas pipe*– it's steel, threaded and about 3/4".

My question is, how can I remove it if I can't be sure if it's out of use*– short of checking with my neighbours as I have done.

Anyone got any tips on finding out if a pipe is dead or alive? :)

Cheers.
