Essex Mark

I have come across a Brittle Black plastic mains water pipe coming up from the floor in the cupboard next to the sink, connected to the mains stopcock, this pipe Is original from the 60/70s.

My problem is this pipe is pipe is cracked, and I would dearly like to find a fitting that takes me from the Black plastic to copper.

The pipe is imperial 3/4 inch, Black plastic (looks rubber) very brittle

The rest of the mains in the house is a grey 1/2 inch plastic pipe which I have fittings for but cant find the Black fittings

The house in question is an Ex council house in Waltham Abbey Essex - the estates in Waltham Abbey are notorious for having no copper in them I think there was a shortage a long long time ago anyone ever plumber there ???????

do you have a cappers plastics near you (part of plumb center)? they will sell you adapters

Hi Plasson fittings will work on this. However a sample of the pipe may be required to identify the correct inserts and conversion kits. I remember working on site of 1500 houses there.Toogoods the plumbing contractors, Handing over 7 a week, Poly-york was used on cold services above ground.

most places that sell water mains fittings will sell fittings/adaptors for the old imperial black LDPE mains.

So is that definetly what it is and what it's called? Black LDPE? Not come across it but want to prepare myself.

its called a transition fitting and they come in different sizes. each fitting will connect to varying diameters of pipe whether lead iron or plastic. basically its a big industrial pushfit fitting

Philmac do a good compression fitting for this, plumb center should have it.

this was used a lot in the 60's and 70's for mains coming into building, so most are an imperial plastic size, can't remember if the modern mdpe is the same size or not. Just make sure the internal liner/support sleeve is a tight fit. we used copper ones with a flanged end back then, still have a couple of them around somewhere

Alkathene?, be careful its very brittle, as youve found out, check out the philmac range of conectors.
