Hello everyone.
New to this forum.
I completed a 12 week "plumbing for the amateur" evening course at the local college last year (1 evening a week). The course was very good and I have now ripped out our old mouldy horrible en-suite and have just started putting the new bits in - with many problems so far and lots of learning as I go along. Its hard work but great fun.

I do have 1 problem though. Today I put the basin and vanity unit in. I have a leak on the metal basin waste but I half expected that and will be out to get a "Basin Mate" washer set tomorrow that I think will fix it.

But my main problem is the watse. I replaced the old U bend with a bottle trap. But it is not draining away! I noticed the old pipe was pretty full of gunge but it used to emptyt fine so my guess is that there is not enough drop on the pipes. After the bottle trap it does drop straight down to the floor but then the waste pipe is flat all the way to soil pipe with no slant at all
Is that more likely to be the problem, or could it be the gunged up old pipes?

Thanks for your help (I will try and post some pics as I go along)

Simon.

P.S. I am also booked on a tiling course at Diamond tiling in a few weeks!

Alright mate. Building regulation part 1 was designed for this and states 18-20mm fall per 1 meter run for a 32 mm pipe and maximum length 1.7m. Those basin and vanity units can be an arse in the pain sometimes. Try siliconing the waste in and if it is a pop up overflow design use plumbers mait around the thread just underneath the hole.

I have solved it!!!!
After taking the basin out and putting it in countless times over thepast 2 days I havethe problem fixed.
I got a "Basin mate" washer pack from B&Q and that fixed the leak on the waste, (with a little adjustment to the big conical rubber washer).
For the waste pipes, I adjusted the lengths so I have the correct fall per meter, but it still did not work. It was really getting me depressed as I had no idea what it could be. I took the basin out (again) and deicded to just blow down the wate pipe to see what happened. Not the most pleasant job but at least the endof the pipe was a new piece I put in. I could tell straight away it was blocked at there was lots of resistance to my huffing and puffing. After a few goes, there was the sound of rushing water and it cleared!!!
I am assuming that when I was putting the new pipe sections on I must have dislodged some of the grime in the old pipes and that is what caused the blockage. (although I have not seen our cat for a while, maybe she is now making her way down the soil pipe!)
Anyway, I out it all back together and it worked like a dream!
So that's the toilet and basin done- now just a new shower to go in.
I am so pleased!!
Thanks.

johnmcginty - thanks for the details on the regulations. I am sure that has helped too as the pipe run had no fall in it at all - Cowboy builders!!!

Thanks,
