Hi all. Newbie here with a CH dilemma. We have a 3 year old Saunier Duval F35 E Classic. The Grundfos pump head was replaced recently (original one seized). Whilst the BG engineer was at work, he noticed that the blow off pipe was 8mm instead of 15mm. My first question is should I have the 8mm replaced? Second question is should a Magnaclean be fitted or again, could I get away without having one installed? Your advice would be much appreciated :)

The pressure release pipework should be re run in 15mm min

Why fit a Magnaclean ,is system showing signs of corrosion,if so ,yes, good idea,if all clean could be BG on a sales pitch again, trying to sell bit,to increase there profits, what did they quote you

Thanks for swift reply. Dirty water was collected from old pumphead, whch could have caused seizure in the first place? BG quoted £250 (fitted). What do you think?

You should be able to get cheaper than that if done by a local plumber, also fernox have now got a unit out that does the same and getting good reports and is slightly cheaper
I think they are avery good investment for dirty systems

What are signs of corrosion? Pipework quote from BG (including 1.5 hrs labour) is £160. Fair quote?

how far is the blow off normally straight out of the wall from boiler - so charge around 70 to replace, magna clean would be 165, so 235 in total and id be there no longer than 2 hrs :) if i got left alone ;)

So BG charge a fair mark-up on their goods, especially if you'd fit a magnaclean for £165 (BG charge £250) and fit 15mm blow off pipe for £70 (BG charge £160).

What are the signs of corrosion? How would I know if the system is showing signs of corrosion and how do I know if I need a Magnaclean or similar?

what area are you in why dont you ask someone off of here to give you a quote.

Thanks for the info :)

Can anyone shed some light on what the corrosion signs are? I'm going to have the blow off pipework done for sure, but am trying to ascertain what the corrosion signs are and whether I warrant a magnaclean.

I'm based in Edinburgh. Anyone here cover that area and can help?

A Magnaclean is a magnet ad so will only remove ferrous oxides (although some makes now have particle filters as well). The signs of corrosion would be black sludge in the bottom of the radiators or pipework, this is iron oxide.

Noisy boiler can be a symptom of a clogged up boiler in need of a powerflush. Feel your rads, if the heat is patchy in places with cold spots in others this is a damn good sign. Also, try bleeding the rad at the topside and have a sniff. If it stinks like rotten eggs then you should get a local fella out (not BG) and get a 2nd opinion. Happy trails!!!
