Hi folks

Just finished new extension and added 4 rads. Used the Stelrad thingy to calculate BTUs and my existing boiler seemed to have enough capacity to cope. The rads seem hot and the house is not too cold (-15 outside!). Does this mean everything is ok or is there a way of a final check with boiler cycle times? It runs for a long time when first firing in the morning but once house is heated up it cuts in and out roughly 50/50.

Anybody know if there is a practical method of calculating that the boiler is running within capacity?

if all rads have a even temperature and the rooms are comfortable, stop worrying you done it right

my old boss used to say even the smallest boiler will heat the biggest house ........ Eventually.

im sure it would but im not gonna try and find out anytime soon. lol

sounds like youve nailed it!
i have sized boilers in new build 3 bed houses and the requirements are around 6kW, yes only 6kW for a 3 bed house, people worry too much. most plumbers oversize the rads which places more requirements on the boiler. central heating shouldnt be like a fire, turn it on and heat the house in 30mins, its designed to be a slow burner and give a steady heat thats comfortable and even

Calculate your heating requirements by whole house heating requirements. Part L Building Regs. ie: size of the property and heat loss through walls, windows and roof. Not size of the reds and hot water vessel.

theres a simple way of doing it for free on line, just google, whole house method
