Hello,

Our toilet has a really short flush and i would like the flush to be longer so we don't have to flush it more than twice each time!

I understand that to increase the water in the tank the ball cock has to rise higher. I'm trying to adjust this but with no luck. There is no adjustment screw for this. Instead there is a pin holding in the arm from the ball cock to the valve. The end of the arm connecting to the valve has a shaped end which does not allow for the arm to go higher. So because of this i am stumped to what to do!

Is there a way to adjust this level in the tank so the flush is longer.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Adam

Flush the wc with the lid off, how empty does cistern get before it starts to rise again ?.
is it handle or push button ?

Bend the arm up to (increase) adjust the level.

There's quite often a mark showing the correct height of water, if the water is on the mark you have a problem with the syphon not allowing enough water thro' during the flush.

First check where to isolate the supply AND prove it works.
There's a slight chance the arm may break.

Is the ballvalve the type that you only adjust by slackening the ball slightly & sliding it up or down a vertical bit? If it is, the arm will be a metal bar which is bent down at end, a couple of inches.
(if it is a fairly straight brass bar that's just threaded at end for ball to screw on, then only adjustment is bending this bar slightly)

Alanc - I've flushed the toilet with the lid off, the cistern empties to about half the capacity of what's in there to begin with and starts to fill up again! I guess that is not meant to happen that quickly.

Snowhead- there is a line to show where the water is meant to be and the water rises up to about an inch and a half below this!
So obviously the arm is not raising up high enough and therefore not allowing enough water in. So because of the end of this arm not allowing me to adjust where the ball cock goes to, you are advising to bend the arm?

Does it work better if you pump the handle?

If it does, probably needs a new siphon.

what type of syphon, is it a manual handle or button ?.

if its a handle, then looking in at cistern, put your hand in at front side of syphon, feel for the hole.....lol

you might see a plastic piece covering a few holes.

if you block this hole, then flush wc.

does the cistern give bigger flush ?

Bit of a *** every time you flush the loo innit?

What happens if you get your finger stuck?

If it turns out that you need a new siphon, these are very good value for money - but make sure it's the right one for your cistern.

What capacity in literage is the pan? You may be getting what you describe as a short flush because the syphon's been set to the maximum capacity of the pan. This is to protect against flooding in the event of a blockage.

If you have a camera phone, you could make a video and up-load to You Tube ... post a link ... get advice ... video the fix ... up-load - and you'll probably get thousands of hits.

You might be the next Steven Spielberg!

Even if it turns out to be a flash in the pan, you will have the satisfaction of the flush of success!

If it goes wrong, send it to You've Been Framed, pick up the £250 quid, and then you can get a plumber in!
