Gingerbread Man

The mother has requested a Brita filter jug from Santa. Her reason being that she's heard that it reduces the scale build up in the kettle.

Brita's website states a reduction in lime scale, so she could be right. Anyone with one who could share their experiences?

I was thinking of installing a Brita filter inline with their current kitchen tap, or installing an extra 'filtered water' tap. (Has anyone fitted a second tap to a standard stainless kitchen sink, drilling an extra hole in one corner?).

If carried out, is 'Brita' just a name in filtering like iPod is to MP3 player, or would it be the one to get?

stick a nice big magnet on the in coming cold main, reduces scale despite what some say, it worked for me when i lived in portsmouth (chalk water city) and it save the combi hex etc etc. then just pop a small bore pipe from cold main into a small tap on the worktop, she wont notice, personally all this britas filter stuff just becomes an expensive past time with filter changes all the time.

Lame Plumber - She's in Petersfield which you may know having lived in Portsmouth - further north on the A3? I've heard many people with the wrap around electromagnets who give good reviews, but have always wondered if they made any real difference. She's probably got the same water as what used to come out of your tap.

In regards to the in-line Brita Filter. I'm assuming that any water filter would do the same trick and that 'Brita' is just a well known name in the market who took the filtered water market to the public??

Dancinplumba- They have what you describe in their kettle, have done since I lived at home! Apart from loosening it in the kettle and ending up in your Tea, I can't seem them being a brilliant idea?

The inline filters just filter everything at certain size and above ! If you want "purified" water the. Look into the likes of RO systems ! There are kits that you can buy to fit the whole tape and have like a small pressurised vessel under the sunk with the pure water in it ! There actually not that expensive ! And the filters last longer ! And because there is many makes around the replacement filters are cheaper. You can ofcoures get whole house filters etc possibilitys are endless but look into RO abd compare prices etc ! I prefer RO.

water in portsmouth if filtered through massive layers of chalk, cant get cleaner than that, london water straight out the thames etc ugh. re mag attachments, i put a big pass thro magnet on my incoming main and never suffered any kettle scaling again, only issue was the 2 22mm flow/return to the boiler was old pipe I connected into, 6 months later the return was totlally blocked as it seemed to also cause all the sediment in the system to drop off, luckily for me, first house and attempt at plumbing so loads of comp fittings allowed me to undo and drill out the blockage. worse still hw ran green baths for 4-6 months, so phex needed a clean as well. After that issue no more problems so I'm a fan of the magnetic treatments, dont need it in exmoor tho the waters sooooo soft.

You then get into having to notify the local water undertaking of the installation though. I run my whole house through two Liff CSW filters. Just need to change the cartridges every 3 months.

About 6 months ago I was chucking away most of my cups of coffee. They tasted of TCP. I thought what the heck and bought a Brita water filter jug and not had a bad cuppa since. I would love one of the Brita taps but I am too tight to part with £150. Oh don't stock pile full price Brita jug filter cartridges as Morissons occasionally sell them dirt cheap, keep em peeled.

There is only one way to reduce the lime scale and that is to fit a water softener.

Have a look at an earlier posting here.

.....and, yes, if you want to improve the taste of your tea/coffee then a Brita type filter will work well, but it will not reduce lime scale.
