Hi, i have just had new boiler fitted (Vaillant ecoplus 618) and a Megaflo hot water cylinder. I have 10 rads in the house. one started leaking last week, so I called BG (I have the £18/month homecare plan), and they came out and fixed the leak. They advised I buy Hydroflow because im in a hard water area and a Magnabooster as i should protect the new boiler. I expect to live in this house for up to ten years. Would these be a good buy, or are they gimmicks? the quote to fit them is c£410 and the they will add TRVs to 6 of the rads for another £200. so all in about £610. What should i do? Thanks very much

call a good independent gsr engineer or competent plumber, think you will find they can under cut BG

I would say knock a third off of the price and you'd be about right.

Where are you located someone from here may be able to offer you theyre services at a better price?

magna clean -£80
limemaster -£30
6 x TRV- £90
total mater £200
so labour cost £410

lol!!!

quick search for BG quoted parts
Hydroflow hs38 172.64
Magnabooster 85.00
Trvs 60.00 total = 317.64

alternative
liff wrappa 60
Fernox TF1 80
Trvs 60 total = 200

One thing to note. BG do not use magna cleans,

they use magnabooster which is made by spirotech is a dearer unit than a magnaclean

Plucky r u sure about it ?????????????

on numbers of jobs i was call to in my way ,which bg did they all had magna clean !!!!!!

i am near London !!

Not that expensive considering you are paying for the highly skilled expertise of the BG engineer.
BG used to fit Magnacleans, they now fit the Magnaboosters.

Hydroflow can be bought for about £125, Magnaclean for about £80. They both do what the manufacturer's state, and are a better method of protecting the system and equipment, than having nothing. BG have given some good advice, but they are encouraged to make sales. You could probably have the work completed cheaper else where. Note: the hydroflow is more expensive than many other devices. I normaly look at you pay the money and you make the choice, cheaper is not always better value.

"highly skilled " when to few jobs bg did near me , and this really put me off one of it 12kw regular boiler in 5 bed with 18 rads ,never got hot they had 3 power plushes 3 new pumps and 20 air vents here there every were :)))))))))) changed the trv few times to,new stats all sort of things !!!

i was going to join them as sub installer !!!

SafeGas I thought they were over the £100 mark for some reason for the magnaboosters.

Agreed some of the BG work is shocking. Its normally the sales mans fault. I sub for hem 1 day a wee but am etting sick of it. Feel like i'm banging my head against a brick wall with them.

If you just had a new boiler fitted, the installer should have quoted for and fitted trv's .This is a requirement under building regs.

thought basic practise was just in bedrooms, best practise everywhere except where room stat is present.

plumbcrazys right under building regs trvs in most rooms and interlock provided(room stat),this does not apply to commercial premises

Well when I questioned this with gas safe, I was told TRV's are a requirement on new builds only and although advisable when changing a boiler they are not compulsary. A prog room stat is required though for swaps and upgrades if not already present.

i got advised differently,i was told to offer controls and if they refuse you must get it in writing suppose it depends on the inspectors interpretation of that reg

when i advice customers of change controls, trv, magnaclean, limemaster, insulation, they think is all to do with selling more and more to them !but when mention to them about part L of building regs ,and possible visit of the local building inspector it all changes for some reason :)

Basic Practice/best practice? Always strive towards best practice. Give custumer quote for either and make clear, that if they don't it, will not comply with BR's. You have therefore satisfied requirements by being able to proove you have given best energy efficiency advice. This is for upgrades to exisisting. Any new installs must fully comply with best practice.
