Whats the crack with bg employees doing private jobs ? I was under the impression that they are not allowed to do any and yet every employee i know is busy bee with private work. one i know even tells the bg cust that bg are a rip off and now looks after the boilers with out of hours work . obviously this happens on mass but what is actual crack with bg and gas safe regarding this??

BG don't allow engineers to work in competition.

Also, unless you took out your own gas safe registration you legally cannot work on the boilers etc.

i know that but every bg engineer that i know seems to be sucking up the work out of hours and are not gsr registered , its the biggest gas industry provider and yet seem to be employing engineers who are probably the biggest illegal workers , wonder what bg would actually do

Yeah BG don't allow it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

How they get around their contractual terms, I dont know.

Maybe they do hold separate Gas Safe registration, maybe they are an additional engineer on someone else's business, maybe they register appliances through British Gas.

they would probably get sacked if caught my dad who was a bt engineer before becoming a gas engineer(he had 2 jobs, the old uns are like that) would not be able to do any work that was in competition with BT it was/still is considered grounds for dismissal

I was always led to believe they checked engineers to see if they had their own registration, that in itself is enough for dismissal?

You know how the customer see's it though, he works for British Gas so must be the bee's knee's!

i believe they are all registered to the same registration number, but obviously have separate engineer numbers like us,i can see BG taking a very dim view of engineers working in direct competition, also as pointed out as BG own the registration number technically working outside of scope/not registered when not employed by BG

Don't tell me BG are being ripped off by their own blokes???

By heck they've trained them well!!!

:driving:Looking after my world!

Looked into working for BG and one of the questions was "Are you willing to give up your personal gas safe registration?". I answered no and was told no thanks then

in almost all direct employed jobs/work its a sackable offence to compete for work unless its agreed in the contract of employment/writing.

i honestly could not care less about BG but do they pay tax, buy materials, pay gas safe...... No. they are dog do.

I can affirm, if you work for BG and get caught doing a foreigner, you will be sacked.
About 3 years ago we were all told to give up our private gas safe registrations but were told if we wanted to do any work for family, the company would allow this and even inspect and sign it off for the HIPS. I put my father in laws boiler in and had it signed off.
