Got called out to one of my regs yesterday, normally get a couple of pops on pipework as lagging never done and is in microclimate, never seen a fitting blow like this tho????
Pipework is now 9 years old, we normally have lever valves go and the occasional crack in a Fe fitting but this!...

Seen a couple of cracked MI but not one like that.
Btw it snowed here today.

Water freezing & therefore expanding has to be extremely strong. The stronger the pipe or fitting, the more likely it is to crack.

tell me about it, spent the morning watching the boys at their football game, then home to renew gutters and facia board at back of the house, it was chucking it down, had to get it done as the builders are starting the extention next week so had to get them down before they start digging, was moaning like you know what to the boss when she came in, and she just cut me dead with "well you should have fitted them last summer when you bought them" oops (checked the receipt which was in the box of fittings and they got delivered in May last year)

"May last year" you bought them?
You are fast worker, - I would normally not get around to fitting things in my own house for years.

On the burst fitting, I googled power of ice, but got a lot of stuff over my head. Only thing I do know is that water expands by 9% when it freezes.

i HAD to fit them as we are getting an extention built and might not get up to them easily once its built,

I was working in Giffnock today and on the way back about half 2 it was like a blizzard when we were passing Calderbank.
