Hi all I'm looking for some advice on my boiler. I have a Vaillant turbomax (either a 242e or 282e model going by the wiring diagram on the panel door) that keeps locking out. The sequence of events is identical each time and is as follows: When hot water tap is switched on , Flue fan kicks in ; Burner can be seen to light through the spyglass; Flame of about inch and a half height runs for about ten seconds, then goes out and lockout LED comes on. After the flame lights, the ignition can still be heard "ticking" until lockout. I would hugely appreciate any advice on this. As a bit of background info, I am a maintenence electrician by trade, and fairly comfortable with the water side of things, but a little wary of playing about with gas!! For example, can i run the boiler with the front cover removed so i can see if the flame is hitting the flame electrode? Thanks in advance for any advice for this Newbie!!

well you say you can still hear the ticking (Ignition) when it goes to lock out, this would point the the pcb board not sensing the flame, thinks burner has not ignited so goes to lock out
This will require a gas safe person to check electode leads and electrode gaps, however maybe pcb itself

Wow that was quick!! Thanks for the quick response. I had guessed at the electrode so ordered a new one and fitted it today, unfortunately the problem persists. Firstly, can i run up the boiler with the front cover (the one with the spy-glass) removed so i can see if the flame is hitting the electrode? Secondly, how do i check that the electrode is functioning properly to identify whether its the electrode or PCB? I guess its a matter of measuring signal voltage or current on the electrode, but I need info on what these readings should be. Thanks again, Jim.

bu**er cant remember the part name😱 the part that sends an electro signal through heat to open the gas
