Burning / soldering mat - which is the best?

Need to buy a new burning / soldering mat which is the best on the market for both Mapp & Propane?

TBH non of them I just use a cheap one and bin it when it gets a bit old

The bloke who trained me used an old asbestos meter base plate. . My heat mats normally last a few installs then I change it for a new one.

Yep especially so with mapp gas, seems to make them crumble and dissintigrate

think they are all crap they are not substantial enough like the ones from 70's and 80's probably the older ones had more asbestos in them new ones are good in that they are slim and can fit in tight spaces but i think you have to accept they only last a fraction of the time. might be worth your while building one into a price when you do bigger jobs.

I use a range of metal plate which i can bend to shape.

There all rubbish now a days. Has any one tried the Laco spray heat deflector? I got a small freebie bottle from the rep last week. Haven't tried it out yet and I'm a bit sceptical. I'll try it out on something that's hidden away before I use it in an area that will be seen.

I had a load of wall tiles left over, offcuts and that, so I used them last time, seemed pretty heat resistant. Other option is use speedfit everywhere

Try a flame deflector for the blow torch. Also laco do a gel spray on heat mat which is good for tight spaces.

I used an old fire blanket yrs ago, that I cut into smaller squares
Didn't give a thought about it being asbestos then
Now use the monument ones which when they get caked in flux, will smoke a house out in about 10 mins

Nothing does, especially my apprentice, can’t handle the heat

If really needed I use a flue knockout from an oil boiler.

But with the superfire I very rarely need it.

whats a heat matt?? I just use a turbo torch extreme. haven't used a heat matt in a few years.

Thinking about it, a piece of 6mm hardi board would prob be pretty good, night gov wit a go when the next mat dies, no good in a corner though!
