I thought on a bypass above the pump you needed a pressure relief valve.
Why do so many places have a gate valve.
Just wondering.

Old habits die hard,in the old days before pump pressure opening valves,it was common practice to use a gate valve to balance down the by- pass ,then came cost, but now the pressure opening valves are quite cheap, give it another few years and we will all be screaming at any one who uses a gate valve :D

So if a gate valve was used is it set to partially open?Say midway?

Well in therory it should be closed just enough to allow the pump to circulate around the heating system with all radiators in the open position

I remember spending many happy hours getting these valves just right.
