tidley peeps

Hi, we have recently moved house and are suffering from a bad smell in our garden. We think this is coming from next doors soil pipe so have fitted a air admittance valve on it, however we are still getting some smells from it. Are we able to fit a bung? We have no mains sewers and have a septic tank. Thank you

Hi TP and welcome ...no dont fit a bung as what you can smell is most likely methane you need to get the tank cleaned out ask some of your other neighbours who they use...good luck regards Turnpin:cheesy:

Your problem is one of incorrect venting. It is a common problem and one which cannot be solved by using air admittance valves, in fact, these are NOT to be used with septic tanks at all. Septic tank gases include methane and this gas must be allowed to disperse into the atmosphere. If you bung up the soil vent pipe, then you stop this gas escaping and are, in effect, creating a potential BOMB underground. Soil vent pipes allow air both in, as with an AAV and OUT, which is essential for septic tanks if you want to avoid an explosion. AAV's only allow air IN!
Chemicals added to the septic tank will not help with the smell, and the stink that you are experiencing from the soil vent pipe is the smell from the drains themselves. Google 'smelly drains' for answers.

putting an aav on the vent will prevent your neighbours loos from flushing long term as well so he wont be over pleased with that one, funny smells and countryside go together, wait till the local farmer spreads his pig pooh on your nearby fields :)

Doh! Tank needs a service. Have you jetted the lines to tank and from tank. DONT CLIMB IN TO TANK but get a specialist in .people die in tanks every year. Needs ammonia rinse and new ecology setting up providing all drain runs ok and flowing freely. Don't use bleach or biological washing powder either. Try and treat your pit like an animal. You save a fortune using non ionic surfactant based soaps. Boots naturals stuff with out sodium salts in it Lavender and other natural stuff.

As im guessing that you didn't have permission to put the aav on the tank
their loos are likely not flushing all that well.
they will likely google the issue if they are smart.
now this forum comes well.....number one most of the time.....

so when they read this, pop down to find the aav on it.

they might be a tad unhappy......

i would go whip it off soon as its dark hunny ;)
