Can't check boiler as water already hot?

My boiler stopped working, so we're using the immersion.

A plumber has come out to fix it but says "I can't check it as the water is already hot".

Am I missing something? Surely running the hot water tap for 5 minutes would solve that problem?

Any engineer worth his salt should be able to find a way round this, even if it is as simple as running water off like you said! Solution: New engineer!

The solution is: not rocket science:

1. Turn off immersion.
2. Turn off boiler.
3. Run hot water down drain until it runs cold.

IMO a plumber that can't figure this out for themselves shouldn't be trading.

Check the heating, would be a good start to identifying your problem

Was the engineer an actual engineer? Or a friend of a friend?

A genuine engineer. I believe he's subcontracted by the builder.

Thanks for all the replies. I suspect it was the last job of the day, he was in a rush to get home, so basically couldn't be bothered.

He can test all controls up to cylinder stat, then link out, turn up, remove stat from cylinder etc and continue fault find from there, either not competent or can't be bothered, either way steer clear.
