Looking for some advice folks!Just back on the tools after a ten year absence.got all nvq's in plumbing/heating 20yrs ago and was looking at doing ccn1.Studying the folder at the moment but was wondering id there Is there any training pre-test as I've never had the ticket before

As a plumber you are a CATEGORY 2, are you doing a 6-8 week full time ( can be spread over longer period by day release etc) course then building a portfolio of work evidence with a gas contractor?

Maybe u can help me answer that one! I have been told there's a job for me once I get ccn1 but I can't see anything like a 6 week course(which would be better I think)just the 4 day course.Do u know how much the 6 week one would cost?? Thanks

If you haven't previously been qualified in gas you CANNOT do a four day course, I work in South Lanarkshire College and Clydebank College, both are Bpec centres and both run the CAT 2 course when there is enough demand, (you MUST be able to provide your plumbing certs to do the CAT 2 course) there are loads of plumbers who cannot provide proof that they are time served and cannot do the course
Best to contact the colleges and ask about cost and availability,
The last 2 courses I ran were over 15 weeks, 2 days a week in college and 2 days portfolio building, but the dates are flexible depending on demand, and depending on circumstances the course is funded by the DWP ( the broo to you and I)

I kind of thought it would be that length of course mate.still got my SNVQ's folder with all the certificates etc.SkillsDevelopment Scotland are funding any course I want as I was made redundant recently.I will contact Ayr college and tell them the score and hopefully get a price.2 days a week for 15 weeks doesn't sound appealing when yer on the broo the noo lol. Thanks for your help

Hi Kirkgas I am trying to work out if there is any difference between requirements in Scotland & England cos the BPEC center I send engineers to, does sorter training for Cat 2 people, sounds like you are doing some kind of gas foundation?
What do you do for Cat 3 i.e. those without any plumbing, heating or gas NVQ's ?
I know I keep banging on about the 70+ days but this is what they tell me the Cat 2 people must show in some form of signed off log before they can do some college training (think it is around 5 day's) & then sit the CCN1.
Thanks CW

You were rite enough Kirkgas.Ayr College confirmed it today.need to be working with a gas firm and do min 80hrs gas work before I can get in on cat2.
cheers

Chris, there can't be any difference between scotland and England as its Bpec running a course that's been sanctioned by GSR and allows the successful candidate to be registered when complete

Jimmy you don't need to be "working" with a gas firm, you can build a portfolio up in your own time as a freebie ( not ideal I know, but it's for your own benefit in the long run) SDS will only fund a candidate who has been registered unemployed for more than 6 months,

Chris, for CAT 3 they do the equivalent of 6 months full time, 50/50 split between theory in college and placement, during college time there are some work modules they do, pipeworks, fitting meters soldering, bending, then bring it all together to service/commission appliances, the CAT 2 doesn't do any practical in college as they have that experience through their plumbing so it's 6 weeks straight theory
