Hi peeps, now i have completed my college course i will be hoping to spend more time in here with you guys hope you can help me out and i will try my best to help anyone as much as i can, anyway as the post says i am installing a central heating system in the next few months for a friend, i have told them i am i virgin CH installer,so there is no worries about customer complaints etc and no pressure on the time it will take, i was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on things to watch out for,
at the moment she has a boiler for CH and separate boiler for HW which will be taken out and replaced with a combi, what i want to know is when you buy a boiler do you get everthing you need to install the system, apart from the pipes obviously, lol, and do you get step by step instructions on installation, also she has a two bed house just standard size like a terrace size but its a semi, what would be the best boiler to fit in a house this size, i will leave it at that for now, no doubt there will be more questions popping up in this thread, cheers fellas...........speak soon

what exactly was your college course and did it include your acs as from the question you have asked you have never touched a boiler before or covered your energy efficiency no offence intended but even a novice wouldnt need to ask these questions

Lol, ok i never installed a boiler in a private dwelling, is that better, no offence but the course i took has nothing really to do with the post,i can tell you i didnt install a combi on it,does that mean i cant install one? had a bad feeling about posting this post,mmm.......laterz

well basically then i assume you have done the 6129 and havnt done your acs which means no you cant touch any boiler and as for asking for instructions to fit a boiler its like asking for instructions to make a bomb
i assume you havnt done part l or define scope part p so wont have covered the sizing for rads and boiler or how to wire it all up or diferences and benefits between combi/system boilers or zone valves
sorry if i was a bit harsh but really asking if you get all the bits to fit a boiler means you are planning on fitting it i assume whuch is illegal and dangerous otherwis why would you ask the question
even decommission of the 2 other ones you cant legally do

hi ste b. afraid newbies right, you cant be touching gas, unless your gas safe registered. get an engineer in to do all your gas work. once the boilers are out, you can start to change the water pipework to suit your needs. you are not allowed to run in a new gas pipe even if you have no intention of connecting it!
once you and your client have decided where to put the new boiler, put that suggestion to your g.r.i. when he comes to decommision the other 2.
if you could supply to 22mm ch pipes to the new position, gate valve them off, leave them pressurised with a manometer on top to prove no leaks. also run the cold to same position and just link it to the hot.
you should just get a standard. installation and commision charge.
if you flush the pipework, leave a sticker somewhere close.
i personally dont mind accepting somebody elses flushing capabilities, however i wouldnt sign the benchmark or boiler warranty as "flushed"

good luck
shaun

thanx for your replys, newbie is right i havent done part 1 and part p, guess thats the next step, electrics no prob i have friend electrician, as for the gas that was gona be left to gas fitter whom i know also, as for room sizes and rads etc i know about this and have a little knowledge on the benefits etc etc,i was thinking of fitting the boiler in place with all associated pipework and rads, i am learning and i wont be fitting a combi on my own with little electrical and gas knowledege, i stupid but not that stupid,...........at the moment i am reading a few installation notes, for example GLOWORM FLEXICOM CX 24-30-35, thats one i been lookin into, no point looking in to them all, i am just specifying on one or two certain models at the moment just to find my bearings, thanx for the info guys, appreciated..........

anybody lol.............

i wouldnt say forget the bits of paper
yes hands on is invaluable but so is knowing the regs and the safety aspect for everything you do
i would say its 50/50 experience and hands on

never 50/50 you can learn regs by hart and still never know how to be a plumber . ahh but makeing a bomb, well last year had to go and see a bomb put in by fast track plumber, unvented cylinder, had his bpec unvented, must have been asleep when he got it,would have been able to read though, must have red manufacturers instructions, and done every thing in direct contrevention of instructions and regs

I suppose that is why its better to get work inspected as done than rely on bits of paper. After all according to the DVLA every driver who has a licence should on paper be a perfect driver.

The thing with practical skills, is that unlike paper skills, they can't be assessed very accurately just by questions. For instance you may know a lot about a subject except one point, but if the examining question is on that one you fail. Whereas somebody may just know the one point and nothing about the others and pass.

So its fairer and possibly more accurate to take surprise visits and demand to see the last three jobs of varying size a person did. If they are right it automatically tells you whether they know the regs or not. And it keeps them on their toes. But by all means have catch up regulation change information freely circulating on the internet as well.
