Hi There,

A quick question to those of you who know more than me....

Can a central heating system be filled with oil instead of water?

If yes what type of oil is best?

I understand that the expansion tank in the attic would need a reservoir filled with oil.
I also understand that a leaky system with oil is more messy and possibly dangerous but apart from that is it possible and is it better?

central heating with oil usually means the boiler is fuelled by oil rather than gas. I've never heard of the heating system filled with oil. I know you can get oil filled radiators heated by electric.

Heat transfer oils are used in process and industrial applications, would be expensive and provide little benefit in domestic or even commercial space heating installation. Cost would also be extensive I would imagine
