Did a 'simple' leaking tap the other week, took me three weeks and three visits! It seems there are a hundred different ceramic cartridges out there, couldn't even strip this one down because the plastic casing was moulded into the brass.
Any body know of any good suppliers, found this page but didn't have the one I wanted. (bit pricey as well as they only offered me a pair of similar cartridges which might not have done the job when I got them! ) Lunn Specialist Plumbers Merchant

the best way is to isolate the tap remove the cartridge and take them to the plumb center, but i must say B&Q are keeping the ones in for there taps(about 6 types). now there is nothing simple about a leaking tap and its not cheap to do, I had one and the cartridges where £17 + vat and the replacement taps where £25

Just a quick one guys on Ceramic discs. I have had a leaky ceramic disc type tap for a few weeks, was only a drip at the time. However I tried to turn the tap off tonight an it failed to turn off at all, it was running at full bore even after several attempts to turn it off. So I stripped it down and removed the disc cartridge. After inspection it seems that the discs would not align at first and then would occassionaly align which would shut off the supply. Is it likely that the cartridge will need replacing? I have put it back together at the minute with the discs aligned so as to shut the water off to the tap but I know when I turn the tap on it will probablly not turn off again. Also I noticed that when I took the cartridge out it had a blue ring but it is the hot tap! Would this cause a problem?? I have heard that the hot and cold cartridges are different, why is this? Any answers would be really appreciated. Darren.

you will need to change the cartridge, take it with you when you go get another so you get the right one, hot and cold are differant on mixertaps as the taps turn on/off opposite way

Taps aren't so bad, I just contact the manufacturer for identification of part and then look for the cheapest online. Frankie were cheap - £17.

Shower cartriges, blooming heck - Grohne always over £100, luckily the 2 I've fixed have been the one way valve stem snapped. Buth then the 'valve' doesn't have any many moving parts.

My old bristain shower mixer I would strip apart twice a year and descale it all, made it like new again. the scale would make it feel 'gritty' to open/close and start it dripping.

Dripping taps can be a pain job. I find B&Q do a good range and i tend to keep 2 of each in the van,,as running about for them jobs just doesn't pay. If its a named tap like Frankie then you can ring them for spares, but no name for tap and my spares don't fit then its a new tap Mrs !

im the same royston

if i have to order a pair of valves then i keep one for myself as spare

sometime flushing and cleaning the cartridge works and making sure no debris on its o rings or sealing washer at the base

Sanitary supplies , kimpton ind estate , kimpton rd ,sutton , they have every type u could ever come across if they don't they can make it!,

I seem to remember actually changing the ceramic half disks on a really old set of quarter turn taps years ago.

Anyway, these days all I do is remove it, take it to the merchants and get a match. 9/10 they have what I need. I always offer client to change hot and cold at same time as they're then both in new condition. Normally they go for this and keep the other one which was 'ok' as a spare back up.

You'll find more up to date threads than this in the main Pluming Forum. But I'm reply to this so we bump it up the list and get the pages indexed correctly because of the new update we've had. So just ignore this if it's all old news.

If you do reply, keep it polite and professional. You can disagree with the above posts, and just be professional with your reply.

Screwfix do a few ceramic cartridges, and they fit quite a few taps. Under £10 a pair.
