Our plumber has just fixed a cracked copper pipe behind the dishwasher. When the dishwasher was removed, we noticed the pipe was completely black & the outside was coated in a dull, thick black coating. The warm water pipe next to it is a normal copper colour as are all our other pipes. The piece of pipe the plumber spliced out was so brittle, he bent & cracked the pipe between his fingers. The house was complete replubmbed & rewired 5 years ago, but oddly the black pipe (which is cold feed) can be traced in to the boiler & all the way to the first floor ( although the black coating isn't as thick as it was at site of the split. We are now worried the entire cold water pipe is at risk of cracking & we have no idea what the cause is. Has anyone come across this before? Our plumber had never seen this before.
