Cold water storage tank

Hello all,

I will be removing an old galvanised cold water storage tank in my loft (unfortunately, still with the lead pipework connecting it to the vented indirect hot water cylinder below). My cold water storage tank is only used to feed the cylinder and as such I am considering what size (gallon) my new storage tank should be? Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

So you are going to have mains pressure at all cold outlets?

You can probably halve the size of that tank. You are aware of the issues with unbalanced pressures right?

Have you considered having a mains pressure cylinder instead?

How bigs the property? What does the cylinder serve?
Why can't you replace the lead?

It sounds like the tank only feeds the cylinder, so no extra pressure going anywhere!?

Work out the dimensions / capacity on litres of your old tank! That's a starter

Yeah, best thing is to match it....and get rid of the lead pipe too if it's easy to do.

get one that fits through the loft hatch

make sure the tank stand is upto the job of supporting a plastic tank, i would imagine it will need replacing to meet current requirements.

just measure the width, lenth and depth get a plastic one close enough and alls good. and buy some leadloks (7lb=1/2(15mm) or 9lb=3/4(22mm)) to convert the lead to copper..

the galvanised tanks do come in all shapes and sizes, your current tank could be big/small??
take the opportunity to get the complete set up, up dated, as well as the tank replace all the lead.
how old is the hot water cylinder?? might be ready to leak as soon as you touch it!

Hello all,

Firstly a massive thank you for all your kind words of advice.It certainly has made me reconsider whether it would be worth installing anindirect unvented cylinder instead. This is however a job for the professional,any thoughts on a rough estimate? (Live in the northwest). However, if I dostay with plan A and go with replacing the CWST I feel the 25 gallon would dothe trick. At this point, I will need to remove the existing lead pipe work tothe vented cylinder but is it possible to use plastic pipe to do so? Once again,my thanks in advance for any advice.

yes can be done in plastic

i would avoid doing the hot water off the cylinder and the vent pipe in plastic. Its normal max working temp is alot lower than copper and when warm goes floppy which is not what you want in a vent pipe.

You can buy nice looking copper pushfit fittings. That way you can have the best of both worlds if it's soldering that you're not ok with.

I went to one house, and the whole heating system had been done in them. (not cheap!).
