Hi. I have a heating/water over flow problem and would like to check my thinking not being an expert.
I have a house, the loft has a 2 large cold water feeds, one looks to feed only the hot water cylinder, the other cold supply upstairs and F&E tank. Both large cold tanks are on raised platforms slighty above the F&E tank.
Problem: cold water tank is over flowing (water has become warm in the tank as well). When I switch off the bolier so as there is no pressure in the system, eventually the cold water over flow stops and then the F&E tanks starts to over flow eventually. All valves are ok. The F&E is getting some backflow as I see the water coming in through the normal outlet directly from the hot water clyinder. So I assume the cold water tank is draining into the F&E via the hot water tank.
So... clyinder is knacked I presume ?

Best way to check is to turn off the mains supply to the CWSC and F & E tanks, then bail out the F & E as much as possible and note the water level, wait half an hour and check the level again, if theres an increase then you can assume the cylinders had it.

Thanks Ian. Will give that a go also. The cold water tank as over night signifcantly drop and is at the same water level as the F&E. I just tired off the Cold water value a few minutes ago and put the bolier on for a few minutes.....and i could feel the cold piple between the clyinder and cold header tank getting warm and see the back flow in the water tank coming in. Plus the F&E tank level is dropping slowly. Now the water level in the cold tank is higher than the F&E. Turning off the bolier... cold level is dropping and F&E is now filling up and has reached overflow.

Question: Is it good practice to replace the immersion heating element in the hot water cylinder as the same time as the cylinder replacement ? ( fyi: heating/hot water is via normal gas bolier )

Dont take it for granted that the cylinders had it. I'd want to be absolutely sure before spending the best part of a couple of hundred quid on a new one. Do as i said in my OP but let everything cool down a bit and leave the boiler off , the F & E level will rise if the boilers on due to expansion making you think the cylinders gone when in fact it may be perfectly ok.

Oh yeh, if you do replace it then definately fit a new immersion, for what they cost (£15 ish) its not worth the hassle of trying to salvage the old one.

Hi Ian. Both water's are off, boiler is off, F&E more or less bailed out of water.... and yes it filled up and the overflow is kicking in. CWSC water level dropping as well. Kevin
