The waste pipe for our cloakroom sink is a vertical metal pipe coming directly out of the ground (I need to measure it, but it looks like it's around 32mm). I'm not sure what metal is and it's been painted, so hard to tell.

What is the best way of connecting the sink trap onto this – can I use a standard compression fitting setup to connect straight onto the metal pipe? And does the fact the pipe is vertical make any difference?

Yes normally use a comp joint to transition from plastic to metal / copper
