Cooling Off Period?

Met up with another plumber at weekend and they informed me that there is a scam going on! 😡

Customers are employing plumbers to complete a bathroom or boiler installation and half way though change their mind as they haven't had a cooling off period, and won't pay the plumber. They then employ another plumber to complete the work and again change their mind resulting in a free bathroom/boiler. 😱

Do any of you have a 7 day or 30 day cooling off period? Do you state this on your invoice?

Not sure how to go about this one, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

never come across this. but i would definately have something to say about it....

i would be ripping the bloody thing back out if someone tried this trick with me.

Boiler & Parts they pay for when i start job,iam only risking my time then.

It does not quite work like that, customers may try the scam, not that I have come across it, but have not got a leg to stand on one of the exceptions to the cool off period is

'services that begin, by agreement, before the end of the cooling-off period'

Therefore they have to pay for your services
If you supply the boiler, they could possibly change their mind on boiler to be fitted, but would have to pay for services involved and provided 🙂

Some silly thing in the consumer credit act (I think) says that you've got to give a 7 day cooling off period if you're going to charge more than £35. The way around this is to explain it to the customer, then give them a card for them to sign which effectively cancels this arrangement.

This is possibly how the customers can use this scam.

So when you turn up to a pipe leak flooding the whole property, you have to spend 15 minutes explaining this procedure and getting them to sign because you're going to charge £40 to fix the leak.

This is not just tradesmen. Imagine a priest consoling some recently widowed person who wants to arrange the funeral. If the transaction for the funeral is conducted in the person's home then the priest has to give a 7 day cooling off period as well.

Don't blame me .... I didn't write the rules, let alone think about them.
