:confused:i know this has appeared on this forum before but no definitive answer.

fitted a pair of 1/4 turn leaver bath tops (with pvc washers) for a pensioner about febuary, she now tells me the hot tap keeps turning itself on again, surprise surprise.
has anyone got a good fix (apart from an elastic band) that stops this happening?.

i seem to think the spindle thread is too steep so not screwing down fine enough?.
i am also contemplating to clean out grease and fill with sawdust or sand to give it some grip?

pile in the ideas lads and i will try some on tuesday and see what works....

what taps are they ?

can you take the handles off and turn them round so they can only fall to off position rather than on. just a suggestion

Is pressure to high causing to open ,if so you can fit regulator on hot or how about replacing tap heads with better quality 1/4 turn ceramic dics

Fit a check valve to the hot inlet it happened to me about a month ago this slightly decreased the pressure

it was for an old dear, you know one of those charity jobs as shes on here last legs.
only charged her about £45 and that included the tops from p.t.s.
now theve come back to haunt me and wants me to sort it?.
shes got a hot water only boiler (glow-worm i think) may try to reduce hot flow but not sure if theres a valve on the boiler yet?. weird thing is it dont do it with the cold?.

Had the same problem, took the taps back and changed them for a new pair.
They worked fine and it was cheaper than putting on a restritive type
check valve. Might be a good idea to get any money she owes you up front,
especially if you see the grim reaper hangin around lookin at his watch!!!

sorted it this aft',
took the flange nut of dropped in another fine 'o' ring and clamped it down tight.
maybee it will wear of sometime maybee not, see how long it lasts.
weard thing is the cold is under more preasure than the hot so must be hot water prob?. next time i think i'll buy ceramic's.

Ceramics are the way to go on high pressure hot water supplies.
The combination of heat and high pressure causes the o-rings and washers to let by, it'll be letting by again within a month or two.
If ever asked to fit these spindle quarter turns I inform the customer that they won't be up to the job and I won't repair it free of charge when it lets by.

yeh, spoke to my buddy today and he said the same, use c/d's because its the heat, and maybe combined with pressure? not sure as yet of that one,.
thing is i really didnt want to do the whole tap as it looked too much of a job for a 'plumbers favour'.
thinking today of buying cheap c/d;s bath taps and using the tops next time if compatable as i can get a pair for£20/?.

use tap, tap heats up, expands metal and rubber washer, turn tap off, metal and washer cool and contract ,tap no longer fully closed
