Hi everybody,
I need to drain a small direct cylinder (second floor used just for hot water supply)to replace it but there is no drain cock. The gate valve on the cold feed pipe is jammed. I do not want to syphon with hose (to far from drain). I want to isolate and empty the water tank, open all taps, undo a nut on the gate valve and hot water oulet to release pressure. Is that ok?
Any other idea guys? Thanks a lot for your answers. ;)

Turn off the water to the property and turn on all the taps . Do not crank any gate valve to release any pressure unless you know what you are doing.

put a tap on 6ft of hose and syphon into a bucket if you want, with water weighing 10lb a gallon a 20 gallon cylinder might be difficult to move easily

to drain the cylinder the drain must be at the bottom, there is no drain so what is he going to snatch?

I have watched this thread with interest,

Surely all you need to do is syphon it,
One way would be to use a garden hose, I have run them down a stair case
or out of a fanlight (higher than the top of a cylinder) or any route so long as
the END of the hose pipe is lower,

The beauty of using a hose is that it so easy to fill using an outside hose con
bib cock,
Just bring the roll of hose up to the cylinder a lower (chuck) the hose out of the window,
You do not even have to remove the immersion heater a half inch hose will
pass through the feed and expansion fitting at the top of the cylinder.

Turn off mains water, syphon it out. If its only 20 gallon, then you will probably get about 10 buckets out if you syphon into a bucket.

Don't forget when turning back on you will probably get air locks.

If you can access the cistern/tank, get a cork wrap it in a bit of silk like material and stick it in the cylinder cold feed outlet on the cistern. Saves emptying the cistern, old plumbing trick years old. You can even cut the cylinder cold feed above the top of the cylinder and fit a new gate valve if you like.

Don't forget the chances are that an old direct cylinder is fitted using the old imperial pipe, you may need a few 22mm imperial to metric couplers.

He doesn't have a idea, or the tools
What he needs is magic
or to do what you said above

He can always pay and go to plumbing school to get the answer
