Damaged flue terminal

Just been to look at an old Vaillant combi for an elderly couple.
It's under a Vaillant contract and they have AR'd it because the bird guard fins of the inner flue terminal have gone brittle and fallen off.

Can I just fit a stainless flue guard to get over this?

Yes I would say so as it's only there to stop birds going in

But I would check the flue

Its taking the problem away , so personally I would be ok with it if I saw it .
However thats only my opinion

I didn't take any
It's above a carport and awkward to get to.

Yes why not, I would check the flue integrity first though to make sure there has been no hidden internal decay.
