I have to de-commission a boiler and strip out 50metres of 2inch iron pipe can I just disconnect the meter burn off the gas and say that is now safe to strip pipework out I haven't seen the job and I know I will be working with a demolition gang so I have to make it as safe as possible I don't want to use nitrogen as I don't know if anything that might be left in situ will take the pressure this is a tad vague I will know more on Monday does anyone on here do much de commissioning it seems a niche area

Well why dont u just use nitrogen ? If it leaks it doesnt matter its still pushing the gas out the line ! Or hook your compressor to it ? And leave it running.

I've used a compressor on many an occasion the had an angle grinder on the pipe.

P for Plenty in this case!

thanks guys if there nothing to damage eg diaphrams I agree nitrogen seems a good way of rendering the pipe safe

Disconnect at the meter and cap it off, then flood your pipework with nitrogen.

When I was on these, the gas guy used to crack the joints and set a compressor going at one end to blow out the pipe for a length of time, then test the air at the other end for gas to make sure it was all out.

But then the gas would just escape through each joint where if you attatch compressor one end or nitrogen and push it all the way out to the other end you can direct it out of the building. Instead of just having the gas collect inside !

Nitrogen would be the 'by the book' way, compressor will be fine. Just make sure no ones smoking where you're purging the line to.

Dont forget the purge kit with flame arrestor and gas co-seeker.
You may need barriers, signage and a method statement if its a site with health and safety types.
