Hi, I'm a newbie on here and hoping someone can help. My apologies but my plumbing knowledge is basic at best.
I have a Myson Velaire oil boiler which, although a few years old, is still working perfectly. We are at present refurbing our kitchen and had thought about changing the boiler but decided that the quotes we were getting prohibitted the idea (and to be honest it would be daft repacing something which isn't broken). My question is this: can the old manual timer be changed to a more user friendly digital model? and if so is there a particular model I need. Thanks.

Thanks for replying. Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean by in zones. Boiler has seperate switches for hot water and heating, so can be used independently. Manual timer has facility for 2 seperate on-off times a day.

you can buy a 2 channel digital programmer for that atless you have some more zone valves like upstairs and downstairs

sorry!! so it will be a 2 channel then! meaning when you turn on hot water it opens a zone valve this what makes everything fire up!! in each channel you can set the times

Sorry but I'm still a bit confused. My heating, both upstairs and downstairs, all comes on at the same time. There is no facility to split upstairs and downstairs. So, do I buy an "off the shelf" 2 channel timer from Band Q or somewhere similar or do I need a specific timer for my boiler?

Hi Mike,
Yes the timer is built into the boiler.
The fascia plate holds the round mechanical timer, seperate rocker switches for water and heating and another circular dial for water temp.
There is a small switch above the timer which allows for either 24 hour running, programmes 1 - 2 and 3 -4 or 1 - 4.
Thanks.

You may be able to fit an external timer but you'll need the boiler wiring diagrams and a sparky who understands wiring heating systems.

Mike,
Thanks for your reply. I'm having a problem finding anyone who wants to tackle this one but the builder who is doing my kitchen reckons he knows someone who had the same problem who got round it by fitting a programmable room thermostat. Is he pulling my leg or is this another way of being able to programme different times for weekdays and weekends etc?

programmabable room stat, to operate your hot water and central heating, i havnt seen them yet!!
take a picture of your old one, post it here, or just the make and model.

you can buy an electronic replacement, if its the one i think, no extra wiring involved, just unscrew bottom grub screw. remove front by tilting it forward from the bottom. it should just pull away ( the only way its connected to back panel is by push pins )

make sure you have turned OFF your fused spur and removed fuse first!!

take your existing clock to merchant rather than b+q and he should be able to replace.

like i said post the picture and i can give you the model number

good luck

Migo,
Thanks for the reply. I think what the builder was saying is that by changing the older style roomstat (Honeywell with round dial) you could have boiler switched on 24/7 but have temperatures set for different times of day. That way although boiler would be switched on all the time it would only cut in at specific times you have set temps for. I can sort of see his point but the hot water would be on continuously, meaning presumably a higher oil bill.

Is it a picture of the boiler fascia plate you need?
I can't find any other model numbers apart from the make of boiler which is a Myson Velaire Deluxe. It was fitted around 1985. Myson apparantly don't make boilers anymore and spares are sourced through Pottertons; an initial phone call to them drew a blank as they couldn't (or it felt more like they wouldn't) help.
I really don't want to change the boiler yet as 3K is cash I haven't got to replace something still working adequately well (albeit with a time clock that is very basic)

Shaun,

Sorry but I don't have the installation guide. I'll try and upload pics to see if it helps. Thanks.
Pat.
