im 21 and i have been gas safe qualified for about 5 months now ,im still with the company i went through my apprenticeship with (family firm) the pay is not that great and i don't enjoy it because of people i work with and long hours! I want to join british gas or go self-employed but i guess im not experienced enough to go self-emplyed yet! But i don't know how my family would take it if i said i wanted to leave? as they have got me through my apprenticeship and taugt me. What do you think i should do??

Sorry for bad grammar and spelling btw

welcome to the forum.

stand by your family and put up with the dross, as one day you may be rewarded handsomly for your loyalty.

is this a agony aunt column or what?.

The grass always looks greener on the other side !
works mates and hours may well be the same if you move
the people you work with now are probably the ones that trained you and maybe still look at you as a trainee,if so you may have to have a word
you know the going rates from this site, bring the subject up,be sensible and adult about it,start to build up respect with family members
5 months is not long and you may be better under the family shield for now

I agree with these guys, going from a company to self-employed with no client base is murder, as you wont have any work nor pay for atleast a couple of weeks maybe even a month depends how much work is around your area. Id have a word with the boss if you think your being treated un-fairly, make it clear that it because your family they cant take the general peiiss.

have a read of all the plumbing/gas forums that are about, here, DIYNOT, ARGI etc and ask people who are self employed, "how much do you earn per hour" and the reality is some guys are getting less than you are as an employee, by the time they price jobs, give quotes, chase money, pick up gear etc etc, you will end up doing more hrs than you do now for less cash and more hassle, stick where you are, work hard, learn fast and maybe in a year or two you might be ready to go it alone, honestly your comment about not liking the long hours says it all about you not being ready to work as self employed, i bet as an employee you get paid for all your hours worked, have a fuelled van, works mobile, pension (maybe) and the comfort of knowing you are guaranteed 40hrs pay when you go back on the 5th, while all the self employed peeps are worrying about what work they might get through jan/feb. sorry to seem as if i'm putting the boot in but you asked

Cheers for the replies! Yeah maybe not ready for self-employed yet.

What about british gas?
