Should both immersions on a direct unvented cylinder have a timer?
Any suggestions for good quality easy to use items?

I would say not necessary.
Leave the bottom immersion on permanently, manually switch the upper one when needed.

I have used a timer switch before where someone kept forgetting to switch off the top immersion after use. I set all the timing periods to zero and they pressed “boost” when they wanted it, this just gives an hour then off again.
There may be an easier way to do this but it worked perfectly and lowered their bills.
It was one of the timeguard ones.

Normally bottom one on the timer and top on manual switch

as for timers I make my own eg Drayton lp111 and a contactor as found the ones made for it don’t last

Are they suitable for the electrical load of an immersion?

yep you can get them upto 63 amp which is around 16kw

for a immersion I would allow a 20amp contactor
