Hi there everyone,

Forgive me if this is a daft question, but I am replacing a Triton 8.5kw shower with another one which is 9.5kw. (it is the same model so the change-over will be easy).

However, I have had a look at the consumer unit and the fuse for the current shower is 32amps. (it is a Proteus Geyer B32). I know I will have to get the electrics changed for that, but my question is :- can a plumber do this job as part of installing the shower generally or do I need to an electricnian ??

Thanks

Robyn

A plumber will need to be a member of a competent persons' scheme and therefore able to self-certify their work, or will need to have the work checked by the local building department.

There are no legal reasons a qualified electrician couldn't replace the shower.

i would get both imho, when i do showers i get my spark to do the wiring part while i do the plumbing, if its a new install or requires upgraded, if its a straight swap i do it myself

The rulemakers will tell you it needs to be a qualified electrician or part 'p' reg installer but the reality is, due to economic climate, you'll have plenty of people wanting to do the job who are not qualified. Does it really matter ?, as long as they know there stuff maybe not. An electrician told me as a rule of thumb- 6mm cable for showers up to 8.5kw & 10mm cable for 9.5kw so bear this in mind as well as the fuse rating.

think i would get a spark in, The new shower will be in for a long time and for the life of the shower the custard will hold you responsable in the way they do the new shower draws 40 amp add some cable grouping any heat factor for enclosure voltage drop over lenght of cable its better to cover yourself

Ask yourself, what would you feel is the safest and best long term course of action? I'd opt for a spark for the leccy RCD and a plumber for the shower and water supply. At least both will come with a installation guarantee
