We are in the middle of having some building work done and are having a ensuite bathroom fitted, The plumber has put the waste from the sink down across the bathroom floor and has made a hole in the stench pipe and siliconed it in, to me this is totally wrong firdstly the sink is mounted on a outside wall so to me the easiest way is out throu the wall, secondly there is about 8 foot of waste pipe running from the bottom of the sink (floor level) across including right angles to join the stench pipe.
Now to me even thou thankfully nothing is fitted as yet if its left like this the toilet when flushed will cause a massive vaccum and drag the sink waste with it plus if the sink waste ever gets blocked it will be impossible to get to anything as the floor will be tiled etc. There is no sign of any valve or anything and to me silicone isnt exactly leak proof.
Even the pipe on its 8 ft run to me is even going up hill at one point, for the sake of drilling a hole in the wall and taking the waste externally which there is a drain directly below they seem to have made a diaster of it, The pipe has been put throu the joists with only a few millimetres left from the top of the pipe to the top of the joist again not entirley happy with it.
The rest of the extension (2 dormers) has gone well also hes used plastic pipes rather than copper ones is this normal practice on the feeds etc

Plastic to the hot & cold feeds is the norm often I dont like it nor do I use it but each to there own. Regarding the waste sounds awful and not right at all, connecting into the vent pipe should be with the use of a strap on boss at least. also incorporating a non return valve within the waste wouldnt go a miss.

can you post some pictures up for us to see?

No it does not seem right, you don't make connections into soil stacks by drilling holes and siliconing pipes in, and lets be frank you probably know it. And yes you will get siphonage as the toilet waste goes past, and the waste is too long for a normally trapped basin.

Have a look at the Building Regs Guidance document H free from government planning portal and also virtually any soil pipe makers for connection details i.e. Osma, Marley, Polypipe, Key Terrain.

Yes you can take plastic right up into the taps, the problem is what does it look like?

Once again have a look at John Guest, Wisbro or Hepworths Hep 2 O site for details.

if you have pick this up i think you should ask for a new plumber on site.
when you approach the plumber about this he might leave you a surprise
for later ,its bad situation to be in .
on the other hand what's the builder like and why is he using this plumber

best of luck

Builders ok uses alot of subbys thou, I came home the other day to a house full of polish plasterers. Ive seen work done by this buider and obtained refs as well all saying the sun shone etc
The plumber however when he turned up originally tried to tell me the condensing pipe from the boiler was to small and wanted to be bigger, best part of it it was him who fitted it whilst working for another compamy two years ago, when he was reminded of this he went pretty quiet also can you run plastic pipes to radiators?

extreamly poor plumbing, have you asked if he is a qualified and competant plumber, does he have insurence, you can use plastic pipe for rad runs, but how many plumbers put them in to a decent standerd, plumbing will soon not be a trade,

Hes going to be told tomorrow in no uncertain terms to put it right otherwise he may well get some "Free advertising" in the local press

if he has run waste pipes through joists id be concerned that he may have weakened the joists building regs will tell you whats allowed but im pretty sure that this is wrong
if the waste runs uphill thats definatly wrong and as for silliconing the waste pipe in to the stack also totally wrong

I think you can run waste through joists providing it complys to the regs, but I dont mean for people to start trying to drill holes for soil pipes

I am new to plumbing but I wouldnt dream of doing this to my house so I wouldnt do it to a customers either. I actually enjoy using copper I feel its a far superior material and craftsmanship.

As u can see ive now posted a pic of said "Installation" over to you

MM'm Not sure on that waste arrangement, Strap on boss required non return required in my opinion and the waste must have a fall on it. From what I can see though I dont think drilling through the joist like that would be wrong but its all to do with the measurments. I think the feeds look awful and downright lazy. Tell him it has to be put right! Is this a new bathroom are building control aware of the work?

I would go so far as to say use a proper boss pipe, strap on boss connectors are the next best thing, the whole layout looks a dogs breakfast, is the 90° bend a w/c connection ??, if so where is the vent ??

I would also say that the length of the waste is to long to be in the regulations especially with the vertical drop at the start of the run, when I was on the tools, this would have been increased by one pipe diameter, to avoid self siphonage

I cannot get my head around the use of the words non-return valve, what exactly is this supposed to do/mean ??

It looks like he's siliconed the 40mm solvent pipe into the 110mm because its on the wider fitting rarther than the pipe although its not clear.

It also appears he is going to tee in bath or shower into the pipe run also?

In which case it should be 50mm anyway, you say this mess is going to be tiles over?

I'd hate to be the one firing screws blind into those cables/sevices/waste run.

Leave it as it is and you WILL have problems.

You're plumber certainly arrives on horseback each morning.

Bearing in mind that the wall where the sink is mounted is external with a drain directly below it although its about 12 ft drop as obviously the bathrooms upstairs
Which is why im totally dumbfounded why he went this harry and billy route

You are allowed to chase a joist by an 8th if cutting down from the top of the joist, and by a qtr if its a hole through the middle, and no chasing within the first qtr from each wall.
Things like this can invalidate your insurance.
It's an inherant problem with our industry that anyone can andvertise and work as a plumber legally with no qualifications.
ps. make sure all pipes are properly clipped or you'll be listening to your new system for ever more!

I have recently changed careers and retrained as a plumber.
3 months full time college has not made me a trained plumber, I need experience for that.
One experience, prior to going to college, involved me hiring a builder to build an extension with a downstairs toilet included.
The 'plumber' was not very good and during a conversation he told me that he had never had any training but was allowed to do the plumbing work under the banner of the building company (owners son in law).
I would suggest that you ask to see his construction services skill card.
If he does not have one then ask the builder to provide a trained plumber.
Hopefully, pretty soon, it will be illegal to work on someone elses plumbing without proper qualifications, as with electrics and gas.

holes drilled in joist should be drilled on centre line of joist 1/4 diameter of joist max with gap of 3 times diameter between them(centre line)
You can only drill between 0.25 and 0.4 off of wall (total span of joist)
Make sure supply pipework pressure tested before floor goes down and drain work air tested
check out building regs part H

1 1/4 waste max 1.7 metres to soil pipe

Whoever did this is NOT a Plumber. If he has had any formal training at all he has totally ignored it!!
