Was asked to service a range oil boiler and the customer commented that they had always been disappointed with the performance. did the usual service on it and found that the efficiencies weren't very good and the CO levels were higher than expected (but still within limits). Anyway I was coming back to fit some pipework in the room behind. When the builders opened up the old chimney breast, this is what we found.

The joint appears never to have been fitted as there was no trace of any fire cement or sealant on it.

Fortunately the old chimney breast had been well sealed up with cement and blocks. The only chance of escape would have been through a vent to the outside wall. If the chimney breast had been ventilated from the kitchen it may have been different.

The worrying thing is that you would have passed it despite this because it was within the limits. It was just fotunate you were coming back and the buiders were doing what they were doing.
