Hi

Can anyone advise me if a gas meter has by law/regulations have to be fixed to a wall or floor by a bracket.

To explain why I am asking this: We had to have our old gas meter replaced as it became faulty - The first engineer said that the replacement gas meter needed to be attached to the floor or attached on to a wall with a bracket, but the second engineer - who came out to actually do the job - hasn't attached the replacement gas meter to the wall or to the floor - the meter is just resting on the floor attached only to the gas pipe work. (The meter's in a domestic property in the under stairs cupboard.)

Just want to make sure that no law/regulations are being breached.

Thanks
Biilee

In what circumstances is the 'sometimes'? - if too long winded, can you refer me to the regs or something?

A gas meter not adequately secured should be classed as "Not to current standards"

As its a new installation, it should be secured in some way and not just hanging off the pipes.

Thanks - does a replacement meter count as a 'new installation'? - our previous meter which had been there for over 10 years was faulty.

Another gas meter engineer has been sent out - the meter not being on brackets wasn't technically unsafe - Just as anz said, it was a case of it not meet 'current standards'. As I type this the meter is being re-sited and fixed to the wall on a bracket (and in a much more convenient position). Gathered that the gas meter engineer who replaced it without a bracket was just being really lazy.

I know this is a old one but the fitter in the Irlam blast left the meter not on a bracket Gas tight the kitchen fitters knocked it and the lead pipe leaked the gas fitter now faces prosecution

the meter needs to be secure so there is no chance of strain on the pipework and connection on both sides. This is now normally done with a galvanised bracket on domestic meters. A bracket may not be needed tho but is normal practice in most situations.

It either needs to be installed on a bracket or the pipework has to be "rigid" in other words its got to be steel pipes that are supported within 600mm of the join at the meter.
