Just wondering if any of you guy's tile after you have done a job?

If so, did you just learn on your own or did you take a course?

Do you think it is a good trade to learn as a plumber as you can finsih off a nice tidy job?

Advice appreciated

Regards

Mutley

I think any plumber/bathroom fitter must be able to tile and even plaster.
I do plumbing, tiling and plastering and save so much time and money.

The idea of paying a tiler and a plasterer on a bathroom job and get them there when you want them would be a nightmare.

I try and get out of it but I'm not always successful. I much prefer pipework.

Always do the tiling myself. Its the only way to guarantee you get it done properly i.e if your fitting a mixer shower with concealed pipework (exposed valve) then you want to be sure the holes in the tiles are the correct size for the second fix of the body. You wouldnt want a tiler dropping a tile in your newly fitted bath and scratching or chipping it.
Im self taught in tiling and i think you'll find its all in the prep and having the correct tools. Also an eye for detail.
Every time i do a full bathroom refit and tiling job i try and make it better than the last which is very difficult when your a perfectionist.

Yes!

When I did pub work, we installed slab urinals and set out the heights to match tiling patterns.

In small firms we often did the tiling and plastering. Who taught us?

Well working in small firms you learn from each other and then with reading a bit fill out your knowledge, then have a go.

The bigger companies usually had specialist tiling or plastering contractors, but not necessarily so. Even the big companies usually expected you to fit your own sink units.

Hi. As i was always trying to maximise my earning on price work as self employed plumber
I could never justify tiling as it don't pay so well (or did not?)and avoided it where possible.

Hi! In some companies, if you do a lead valley your expected to take the slates out and put them back, the same with roof tiles.

You may even be asked to lay out a roof plan for the joiner, if its a lead roof. That means deciding the falls and drips, position of rolls and so on.

On other sites you may be asked to lay fall's in and grade the bottom of trenches for drains, then lay the drains. That means boning rods and all that.

You may be expected to site thrust blocks on water mains.

Plumbing interacts with other trades at many points, and you would be expected to know the other trades job as well as your own, as far as it involved Plumbing.

Rubbish. You get a good tiler that you use all the time and a joiner. The tiler I use can do the job in half the time it would take me and I can never fault his work even round showers never a problem. I can go and do plumbing work and make a sight more money that wating time tiling. Yes I cut tiles out do repairs and make good but that's about it.

Real plumbers don't have time to do tiling they are too busy plumbing, It's about being well organised with the work and finding the right partners.

I do enough with gas, plumbing and part p. I have my spark when work is out of my scope and a tiler for my bathrooms. Dont want to take up tiling, its another trade and I dont want to lose plumbing work because of tiling.

We are only talking about repair work, not full tiling or plastering jobs. Incidentally in the 60's a brick layer usually did the tiling. There where not many specialist tilers about.
