We have a problem with our cold water tank in the loft in that the over flow drips at various time during the day. The tank only serves to feed the hot water tank below in the cupboard. I have replaced the Ball float valve three times now but it has not cured the problem. We have had a plumber round twice now to try and solve the problem. He has moved the cold water tank and raise it but it has make no difference. The overflow will drip more when the boiler is on but stills to drip when the boiler is off. The hot water to the taps in the bathroom and kitchen is only hand hot. I suggested to our plumber that as the water level in the cold tank seems to rise of its own accord that maybe there could be a breach in the primary coil, but he said that if that was the case then the water in the cold water tank would be murky, so I am stuck and don't what to do next.

Help please!!

Its ok changing the ball valve but did you set it up so that it has a sufficient gap between the shut off point and the overflow opening?
The system could also be heavily pumping over? Is your pump sited correctly? Is the pump the right size? There could be a blockage in the system! It is hard to say without looking at it but it is a relativly simple problem!

Hi there, the water in the domestic cold water feed tank would not necessarily be murky if the heating water primary feed was leaking. If the expansion tank has been raised, are the water levels exactly the same for both tanks? My guess is that the bottoms of both tanks are the same level, but the water levels will be different. I would definitely look at the hot water cylinder leaking internally through the coil. One way to establish this would be to drain down the domestic cold feed tank and see if the overflow from the expansion tank drips then.

Hope this helps,

Graham
