If replacing a shower enclosure will any correctly sized (say 1000 by 800 offset quadrant or whatever) fit any existing tray or is it always better to source the original item to ensure dimensions line up with matching tray / original fixings / marks on tiles etc..? One factor might be if the exact replacement is much more expensive or perhaps if you suspect it has a design flaw that the replacement may also suffer from like weak runners or something.

Can't quite make out what you're replacing but I'd never want to re-use either a shower screen/door or a tray. I'd much prefer to change both, especially as damage during the re-tiling/fitting new door, might end up with having to pay for a new tray out of your own pocket. (Or, even worse, an unseen scratch not noticed by you before you start the job.)

PS - NO question is stupid or dumb (well, apart from some of those I ask). You'd be surprised how few people ask questions because they are too embarrassed at not knowing the answer; so purely by asking it you're probably doing many others a favour.

I do realise this is a place for free enquiry but I still have a knee jerk reaction to preface the simpler questions with pleas for forgiveness because I seem to remember when I first joined here there was an awful lot of hostility to those who turned out to be working as plumbers but inexperienced (especially fast-trackers.) I could be wrong but I think this has dwindled significantly over the last couple of years. Not sure why...

Well what it was was a broken shower door. Customer had documents so I found the right part for him. Quite pricey though so was wondering. Don't think I could have got away with suggesting a new tray too though - even though I do understand why you'd fear it necessary.
