Guys, I am leaving the forces in June and want to be a plumber, I can fund my own training but need a company in or around the Glasgow/West Dunbartonshire area to offer an apprenticeship so I can learn on the job while training. I am a mature family man with life experience who wants to take on a second career in the plumbing and gas industry. If you can help then please contact me on 01436677710 / 07845093623.

Many thanks

Plumbing game is not good at the moment, why don't you try air conditioning or refrigeration .
I work with many trades and building trades seem flat

my opinion only

If you get an actual apprenticeship with a stable established company and you're prepared to go the distance the old fashioned route and can cope with half a decade of very little money I wouldn't say don't do it because not only would you have got an opportunity that's extremely rare but you obviously have dedication. But I'm afraid it's true that the industry is flat at the moment - how permanent this is nobody really knows - the problem is it's not just the economy but how over-manned it is and with other factors like DIY domination and the cult of the handyman. It may all sort itself out and go back the other direction and that may co-incide perfectly with you finishing your apprenticeship - if you can find one. But it is a big if. Good luck though.

i have heard the good money is in refridgeration gas engineering now due to every shop and every fridge unit requiring a 12 month mot check by law...
been offered 3 coontracts with company vehicle over the last 2 years.

Guys,Thanks very much for your honesty in replying to my initial thread. I am going to stick to my guns and crack on with the plumbing trade, even if I dont get offered the Modern Apprenticeship or any other for that matter. I know times are hard but after spending 26 years in the Navy Im willing to give it a go. I believe I am offering an opportunity in paying for my own training, I just need someone to take the initiative and take me under their wing. Again, many thanks.

Plumbing/GSR is good BUT many will say that MCS is the way ahead - somebody told me the other day that it will be illegal to install a gas boiler/heater in any new builds within 5 years!

PowerFlusher2: I have no reason to doubt your point, after a read through the plethora of MCS info on the web it is looking like 2020 is the target with 12% of energy comingfrom renewable energy sources. Currently 50% of energy goes to heating and hot water. I can only hope there is enough non renewable energy left over to see me through to retirement. Many thanks.
