Hi, i've got a central heating resit (Failed by 1) on the 3rd of june, and i got some questions im not sure about. If anyone could take your time to answer them please do.

1). What is the recommended capacity of a f&e cistern for a small domestic propery?

2). What should be carried out before adding corrotion inhibitor to a new central heating system?

3). What is the max clip spacing distance for 15mm coper pipe? - also for 22mm?

4). What hieght should a open vent pipe rise above the water level in a open vented central heating system?

Thanks for you time.

not being a wise guy, but if you read your course books or notes you might learn the answers and not need spoon feeding, then you would make a better plumber in the end

F&e should be 210 litres.

If i remember right clipping distance is 1800mm

open vent pipes should be rise 400mm. Do you not have a Heinemanns?

i answered these on my cold water exam years ago... surely you must know

i dont think the first 2 answers are correct ( cant remember height of vent)
a F&E cistern is a 10/4 (gallons in old money) 10 when filled to the brim, but should be set to 4 to accomodate expanded water, 210 litres is the volume of a cylinder, he asked for 15 & 22 clipping distances so at best 1800 could only be one of the 4, 15mm horizontal is 1200mm,

Your obviously trying to be a wise guy, i missed alot of notes in central heating, so i dont know every question that i would have if i never missed the subject.

Thanks alot to the the ones that gave me some answers.

Yeah you're right. I'm getting a little confused. I don't think i helped the OP much more like confused him more.

Just rechecked and it's a rise of 450 mm so i was nearly right just 50mm out.

Plus me being an idiot was didn't think. I thought he meant the main cistern not the f&e. The f&e is usually around 18 litres.

if you read the books youll learn the subject and rember and understand the reasons and whys and wherefores. Just being given answers wont help in the long run and you wont know your subject well enough to do a decent job. Im not a wise guy, just someone who wants people joining this workforce to have a decent understanding of the job. When I have lads doing work with me and they dont know something, I tell them to go to the van where I have some manuals and look up the answer, then they learn and remember better than just being shown or told. Then when something similar comes up later on, then I ask what needs doing and they have a go at telling me and we discuss the answer if something is wrong or not quite right. Just going on the net for help wont help anyone in the long term, you have to put effort into learning a trade or your just wasting your time, go and stack shelves, you dont have to think there.

That's good advice. Definitely the best way to learn is do things for yourself.

f&e = 5% of system volume.
exp 450mm.

and as for pipe clips?.
if you realy dont know that one you better look it up, its one of the simplest things to know in the first week of a plumbing apprentice.

I have to agree with Oldplumber if your that far into your course that your gola is next and you don't know what a f|&e capacity is then you need to have a good old sit down with your nbooks and cram read your way through the htl heimann tech cert level 2 book my friend as i too am on the last legs of my tech cert 6129 and i know what it is ???? look it upppppp.
