How do you guys work out what size of expansion vessel is needed for each system?
Is it just a case of working out how much water would be in the pipes?

Thanks in advance

I would be using them on a solar system with the pipes going straight into a hot water storage system. with the expansion vessel being situated before the HWSC.
I was guessing as the water expands by 4% that you would just estimate the amount of water that would be in the pipes.
I would also be doing the same thing but with a solid fuel back boiler.

No don't encourage him, he may not be a mickey taking troll but he may actually be seriously considering making a solid fuel backboiler system sealed.

Illegal and dangerous!

i was being serious about the back boiler. sorry to sound stupid :p
i would have been doing the work in france (things are a bit different over there) they dont have any storage cisterns.
I have looked at a few systems with a back boiler and from what i can tell they are all running with a expansion vessel, with no vent pipes.
they are all ran as central heating systems, so with radiators, wouldnt that get rid of the air in the system, when bled?

Any work needs to be done in accordance to the country's regulations and standards. Consult the regional Building Control department for advice. Equipment design can vary from country to country. Unsafe systems are extremely dangerous.

yes i realise about unsafe systems.
But i didnt know the english regs, regarding the installation of back boilers

or the french ones, even the frogs dont like being boiled alive, hence why you have to be licenced by the local mayor or whatever before working and they really do not like non registered folk doing work, only know as one half of the family lives in that place over the channel.

If any solid fuel burning appliance is sealed you need loads of very good safety devices like cold water quenchers and ladamat style pumps. and the appliance has to support these devices ie purpose made.
