Not sure where to post this as it is not really a question but just finished a 2 day bathroom refit in a rented property with 1 of the plumbers I work with and it was an eye opener for me. How can people live like that, there was sh*** & pi** everywhere and the smell. As soon as you walked into the place the smell hit you like a brick wall. I think I will need to a bath 3 times a day for the next month to get rid of the smell of my skin.

Has anybody else had a job like this or even worse ?

what no rats or cockroaches ?

dab of vick on your top lip works wonders on the smells

been there myself.

the joys of a big commercial plant room where i live nowdays !!

I don't think the rats or the cockroaches could bare the smell so the all buggered off. I am sitting here just typing this and feel like gagging just thinking about the smell. I used to be in charge of a sewage plant and you get used to the smell but what I smelt the last 2 days was unbelievable. Oppps got to go.

did a job in cornwall ,piles of sh**ty disposable nappies in hall, house full of flies ,every thing dirty ,ladys husband looked like a pile of rubbish never moved from setee all day ,i asked if he was still alive as i left as if not i would inform undertaker because of smell she got right up tight called me an english basterd

In dimly lit room in a house we caled "the house of grime" I actually knelt in a pile of cat sh** that was blended in to the pattern on the filthy carpet.

Went to one flat that you literally, and I do mean literally, could not see the floor for all the rubbish and clothes spread everywhere. How some people live is beyond me.

You can also look at it the other way as well.
Whilst spending some time helping a mates firm out a few years ago, I was running around high wycombe doing maintenance work on some housing association houses, anyway the phone went for me to attend an emergency because a ballvalve was running.
well the lady of the house must have had a cleaning fetish because as I walked through the front door the place was spotless but stank of bleach to the point that my eyes were stinging, and there was bottles of the stuff everywhere. It turned out that if anyone used the toilet she would take the lid off the cistern and pour bleach into the cistern before it filled up, and she had manged to melt the plastic ballvalves on both the wc in the bathroom and the cloakroom.

I have had a couple of jobs where I felt like crying 😱 I love blogged bogs but this is sickening. I had to change bath taps and basin taps the carpet was minging. What got me though was undoing the taps and a little water everything became real slimey 😡

But what got me was I couldnt find a plug socket because of all the rubbish to plug my inspection lamp to change the float valve in the cold water tank.

But what really made me laugh was as I was putting the bath panel back on the customer came in and sighed and said bloody talcum powder gets everywhere as he dusted the top of the bath with his fingers 😱

I honestly didnt know whether to laugh or cry, anyway dust sheet and my trousers in the bin.

one house i went to the cooker top was filled with solidified fat 2 inches thick you couldnt even see the burners just round slots in the grease where the flames came out and it was actuall still working

Dealt with a few houses like this, not when I was a plumber but in another industry.

I had to walk into a house and in the living room there was only a chair, this chair was in the middle of the room, surrounding it was newspaper which was covering the entire floor space. On every piece of news paper was a pile of sh**. On questioning the home owner the reason for this was that it prevented burglars..............

yes its horrible ive experinced this many times now i just say will you please clean around my work area with bleach and hot water, if they give you any guff i just say look your bathroom carryies many health and safety issues , only once did a customer put up a fight so i just called my boss and he sadi never worry we cant work in ****.

its mostly rented student accomadition i find this probelm

know your limits /standards

when i was a subcontractor i was sent to some homes in and out in 5 seconds cockroaches.
one house fitter heating then got to the cylinder room ,walk off the job running alive, the foreman complete that one
one in west London the gear turn up a day and 1//2 late the customer had so much furniture and did not attempt to move any ,when try lifting carpet
it was nail down with 4 inch nails. i was doing some one a turn i was told.
walk off that job . don't help me i wont help you lazy baskets ....

but this one i remember well
some x drug den void in north London , sticking in heating not a problem
but using a extension cable from next door good old boy,,,with about 20 cats
but at the end of the day i had to get my cable back, whoops
the old boy comes out with a chop sandwich and a class of beer.
i said i will eat it on the way home but the beer i had to down in one
on the way home i was spitting about 500 times, when told her indoors she p... her self. o yes the sandwich got a home in the bin.

when started up on my own i choose my customers none of the above

Ive worked for the local authority for 18 years now and believe me ive worked in the most disgusting properties you can imagine. (Disclaimer...99% of council tenants are clean living)
I will sometimes take photos on my phone to show the misses when i get home to prove what im saying. (Ive built quite a collection)
To be fair over the years i couldnt pick just one memorable dirty house but can remember when i was an apprentice and getting home and removing my overalls i had two yellow stains on my jeans around the knee area where i had installed a toilet in an old blokes house who had carpet in the bedroom.
Here you go look at these

Oh yes...I have gone through such situations...I had to give the owners a lesson on 'Hy genie"

When I first started out ,one of the lads that taught me had a pigeon loft at end of garden, went in and in the corner there was a tub and bucket
That was for the times he worked in some undesirable properties, he would come home, in back gate, strip off in shed and wash and stick cloths in bucket ,miss's would not let him in the house otherwise, the next morning ,he said you could see flees and insects floating on the water at the top of the bucket soaking his previous days cloths.loooovbly
Always find single Doctors houses bad for some reason
Went to one once, bathroom disgusting, anyway was waiting about and put a line down the centre of the basin and cleaned left hand side, taps, waste and china, left spotless, other half, black ,mouldy tooth brush, toe nails, scum ect, thought they may get the message but no went back about a year later, you could see were cleaned but just one side less scummier than the other
Now I am older, just turn and walk out

worked in a house a few years ago, full of budgies about 20 i think, went in to the bathroom started taking old bath out and noticed what looked like specs of dust on the floor, thought nothing of it brushed it away with my hand, next thing i know there is another patche of this 'DUST' in the corner, only as i took a closer look these specs were moving, they were only bird flees!!!!!!! straight out called office council had to go and clean up the house and i had to go to the docs as i didnt know that bird flees were dangerous! safe to say i didnt step foot back in that house!

Went to a house about 2 months ago problem with toilet, the smell was unbearable(and I used to work on sewage sites). I knelt down and the p**s in the carpet soaked into my trousers and knee pads from the carpet. Did job and gone.
Got a call from him about 4 weeks later for another job(was gonna pass it to a mate, but I thought he won't be friends with me after that!!!), and as Steve said I plastered my nose with so much Vicks I could hardly breathe(which may have been a good thing.

having worked in some kitchens of local hotels/b&Bs I never eat out in my home town, and I tend to walk into pub kichens by mistake to see what they are like before i order food.
changed some taps in a commercial kitchen recently and i had to lie on my back, so i used the dust sheets which ended up stuck to the floor!!!!!!!!!!!!

went outside for some air and noticed the neighbours soil pipe was cut off and blocked with various waste jammed in the cut off section which were overflowing into the courtyard i was in. Based on the fact the part of the flow was definitely solids!!! i noticed that footprints were clearly visible showing a trail back into the kitchen were the owner was allowing food to chill on the work surfaces (didnt believe in blast chillers) and the airbourne squadron of flies was having a great time sampling the c**p outside before flying off to taste the lasagne and spag bol sauses. Still when i finshed at least they could all wash their hands before working with food now. lol (someone also rang environmental health complaining about the kitchen cleanliness later in the week)

did one of those a few months back, had to glue the pan down as the floor boards were rotten with p.ss.🙁
and another one a bath, laying between bath and toilet changing bath taps, chicken bones and rat droppings all over the place.

Walked into a place like that once, walked straight back out, one of the guys they sent in to clean it up wasnt so lucky he caught septicaemia, died 48 hrs later..

I never went back ...

went to blocked pan in sweatshop steam pipes running through w.c area about 90 degrees in there imagine the smell I thought toilet had backed up turned out cistern would not flush but staff still continued to use it even with mask on and dab of vick could still smell it .had to fish out all paper and solids first with bent piece of copper cleaned up made client aware of cause told him he should have put it out of order he told me he would obtain replacement cistern and call me back to fit it.10 days later letter from my bank refer to drawerer please represent hands up how many of you have had one of these🙁 went back and offered to remove pan free of charge🙄 left with cash so the moral of the story is if faced with this type of job always get your cash up front regards turnpin
