Hi,

Does anyone have any thoughts on the use of Gyproc Fireline board to clad some existing timber in a builders opening for a nat gas fire?

Thanks

Yes, this is an inappropriate material for a chimney opening. Plasterboard does have some fire resistance, normally 30minutes in event of a house fire, but is not designed to be fitted inside a chimney opening. The material used must be a suitable approved chimney/flue material.

Hmm i was thinking the same, i had asked for the timber to be lined with fire resistant boarding(OK according to Gas Safe), i was thinking Supalux etc but Fireline has been used instead.

Bearing in mind its only heat and not in direct contact with flames Im just wondering how hot the temp would get, as the Fireline is only rated to 49c i think? How would it fail when the temp exceeds this rating?

first post said it all, you have to ask yourself why is timber in a builders opening anyhow, get it out and start from there.

Its not just the heat to consider, its the products of combustion which is made up of loads of water vapour.

It would need to be a material that meets the british standards for non combustable materials. Not just have a good fire rating. Supalux with correct fixings would be a good idea.

Well had the timber and plasterboard removed, the bloke they got to do it made a right rough job of it, its good enough just rough.
There was lots of moaning from the tenants how it had been fine for years etc. Don't understand why someone would want to keep it like it was, it didn't cost them anything.
