I am doing my first cp12 on a fire on Friday. I have listed some of the procedures I will be carrying out on the fire . I just want to know am I missing anything or have you guys any usefull tips.

TRY AND OBTAIN MI INSTRUCTIONS
CHECK GAS RATE
CHECK FLAME PICTURE
CHECK SAFETY DEVICES
CHECK FLU ( SMOKE PELLET ) DOES FLU NEED TO PREHEATED ?
CHECK SPILLAGE ( SMOKE MATCH ) AFTER RUNNING FIRE FOR 5 MINUTES
CHECK VENTILATION IS ADEQUATE AND NO VENTILATION OBSTRUCTED OR COVERED.
GO THRU CP 12 TICK BOX PROCEDURE.

look for things which may effect ventilation like fans etc, do spillage test with doors and windows closed, do spillage test again if there is a fan or something similar in room, if there is a fan in the next room open door and put fan on and do spillage test.

you must check catchment space aswell

check closure plate and its tape, check chimney..

smoke pelllet for every floor of the property, including loft, check for vents only above 7kw..

you dont have to wait to heat things up, unless it fails, then wait..

Hold on there. There's a big difference, depending on which fire your testing. Is it a DFE, LFE, flueless or conventional gas fire? Some DFE's and LFE's require 100cm of ventilation regarless of kW input, flueless heaps of ventilation, depends upon manufacturer instructions. Good practice to pre heat flue before flue flow test, but most will work OK without.

any usefull tips.

i thought the golden rule was,
if you are not familuar and competant with a known appliance, then without the appropriate m.i's, your not to touch it. i.e.; how do the coals lay? or do you just guess without the m.i's?.

Absolutely

Check ventilation first if it fails no point doing the rest. Then after TT if it's got radiants take them out and check behind for cracks for the same reason.
If in doubt ring gas safe if your in two minds over something.
Hopefully first of many, good luck mate.

Before flue flow test with pellet use a smoke match to see if there is a pull. It wont guarantee the full flow will go but it will indicate if it may need heating up and save you filling the room with smoke.

I have never been to a rented property where they have the MIs for the gas fire i am lucky if they have them for a 1 year old combi and then they still try and give you the instructions for a time clock and claim thats all they ever had lol

That made me giggle. But your spot on. No tenants ever keep MI's I don't know what they do with them but I'd say your more likely to win the lottery than walk in to the property and have them hand you the MI's for a gas fire.

As far as servicing it goes just follow what the lads have said and you can't go far wrong, most of the information will be on the data badge, but as far as ventilation and coal arrangment goes then you'll more than likely need the MI's.

But I would just take your time and you won't go far wrong!

I can't even get the MIs for my own fire to see which way the coals go, so it hasn't been used in yonks

funnily enough weve not used ours for the same reason but whilst clearing out the man drawer recently i found the mi's now i just have to get around to rearranging the pebbles before winter

went around to 80 odd y.old custards house this after, to look at cooker install. whilst i were there she asked if i could take a look at her gas fire as it was burining her legs off on low.
she only had took of all the coals re-arranged them & all upside down etc and signs of scorching to the fire sides!!!!!

It’s always good idea to ask the customer – Would you mind to turn the appliance on for me, please? There are some clever folks out there – you never know.
