My other thread regarding the materials needed that i posted Friday was for my first private job!

All went well and customer was happy. Probably didn't make more than £130 but that's money i wouldn't have earned sitting at home and the experience was priceless.

After i have done my baxi courses i'm going to start advertising and hopefully i get a chance to put what i learn in to practice.

Well done. Now learn how to sell a powerflush as a legal requirement and u could be up to £ 1200 a shift ! It's brilliant when it goes well, slightly less fun when it goes squeaky bum!

Thanks guys was 'slightly' longer than half a days work for me. Drilling through the joists, attaching the shower valve, batoning where needed, had to cut out the toilet waste and pull out in to room below to cut to required size, putting in pipe work for a towel rail, alot of things i wasn't aware i was doing or aware i would need to do. goal posts got moved a bit when i arrived but it's something to be prepared for in the future.

your first taste of self employment!!!

on your first few jobs slightly over order but don't charge the customer for the extra and keep those for your own little store.
i personally started with copper fittings, the odd compression fitting and waste bits.

its a godsend when as you're doing private work you cant afford to say "I'll be back Monday"

Don't worry about going over on time. This will happen less and less as your experience grows. Customers will always shift a tad so just make allowances in your quote. Once you are more confident just up your prices until the work seems to dry up. At this point you have got pricing for your market right and adjust accordingly When you have a bigger job try and budget for a new tool. Not that the customer pays directly but this way you build up decent kit that will earn you money in the future.Alway buy quality - just look at what the hire centres have. Better used quality than new tat.

Well done....it can be quite daunting and nervy to start with!

sounds like you got a bit of a buzz from it, shows your in the right trade

cheers for the replies guys. Will be aiming to get more private work in the new year, will give me loads of confidence and the extra money will always be welcome. If I could get a few little jobs each week (will take a long time to get to that point) it would make a huge difference to my income.
