Hi Guys,

Got to quote to fit my first gas fire for a mate. It's a baxi valor 946. There is a 15mm gas supply next to the fire surround. It's a 10 yr old house. I'll make sure the chimney gets sweeped as it's not been used at all as this will be the first fire installed there (builders didn't fit it!). I was planning on running the 8mm copper out of the elbow back into the wall and behind the fire surround, as I've had a look at mine at home and that's how they've run mine!

Is there anything extra I need to know re ventilation? I've just been having a look at the MI's online. What sort of price should I be charging to install and commission it?

be very careful about fire installs, lots of building work may be required dont forget to recommend a gc1 gets fitted and price in a co alarm, not as easy to fit sometimes as it looks read mi,s backwards

Basic ventilation calculation required based on KW of fire. MI should state if any extra ventilation is required.

I would want £150 min for fitting one.

whats a gc1 ?

I wouldnt always reccommend a gc1 as Id only use one if Id installed a flue liner. Whats wrong with a normal pot and bird guard as a nice pot fits in with a building and a lump of aluminium looks bloody awful in my mind. If the chimmney is ok and theres no jackdaws why disturb the look of things. Most important of all followe the mfis to the T and you cannt go wrong, agree on the CO monitor tho' essential item now. My opinion over, let the rants begin.

If your not going to use a copex liner, be very careful the chimney is sound all the way up.
As oldplumber I would not be inclined to fit a GC1 unless a liner is used or MI's state different.

if your saying the builders didnt build the chimney and it hasnt been used then I think a flue liner is the way for you

I think he said the builder didnt fit a fire, but the chimnney was built?

The house is only 10 years old, so just test the chimney for flue flow thoroughly, test it in stages if you want to be sure. So do downstairs and upstairs walls for leaks first, then put another pellet in and do loft and outside after.

No point in a liner in my opinion if the chimney is sound. Thats what british standards state so if its good enough for them.....

Its easy for us to make a very simple job very very complicated haha!

Before you know it a fire install will cost them £2000

P.S. What flue/chimney diameter is it?

Correct, in terms of chimney diameter, I need to go back and measure it all up yet.

just another tip for you if the total flue length from the spigot of the fire to the top of the chimney pot exceeds 12mtrs internally then you have no choice you will need to fit a fire box and copex liner with a gc1 terminal if it is a fire with a flue diameter of 125mm, if it is a decorative fuel effect fire you will need 175mm minimum diameter and you will also need a purpose provided vent not any less than 100cm2.
