Hi all,

New to these sites so please go easy.

Up until recently, it was my understanding that you carried out FGA on a boiler on gas certs or any maintenance that could have effected the boilers combustion - happy with that.

0.0004 = OK
0.0004-0.0008 = Acceptable
>0.0008 = Maintenance/repaire required!

However, recently the law has changed that we now have to do FGA on cookers and fires but I cant find the Kane book that came with my unit and I can't find anything on the web (Shocking)

Any Help great appreciated

Mark

as a qualified person why are you shocked that technical info that you paid dearly to get isnt on the tinternet? im more shocked that you cant lay your hands on the technical info that you should have to hand, and as a new start are constantly sticking your nose in to make sure you do everything correctly, your CPA training notes, or relevant BS docs will fully cover all you need (haha Mr grumpy head on today)

Also check how many zeroes you have after the decimal point- common mistake.

0.0040 or above, service reqired at min.
still over 0.0040 after service but below 0.0080 aceptable
over 0.0080 unaceptable
so 0.0009 would be perfectly ok as its a different decimal place if you know what I mean.
Hope that makes sence, Kirk will soon kick off if ive got that wrong

The notes that came with a CPA1 course would be a good start but I prefer to use the relevant British Standards. I like it when Kirk has got his grumpy head on.

what do you mean you have to do fga on cookers and fires?

the reason i ask is i think you have mis understood what the new cpa1 requirement is about.

welcome to the forum too :) , keep asking questions and you will learn alot from the forum.

as regards action levels:

Gas Safety| Combustion Processes

Since when has it become "LAW" to cpa flippin cookers??? That is ballderdash!!! I freekin hope!!!

last i heard the new laws for cookers was after its been fitted it needs to be tested by the cooking of a bacon sanga for the installer?? ;)

I know flueless gas fires have to be done but normal fires and cookers never heard that and our gas manager is pretty good handing out all the tech bulletins.

always good advise to use 4 pans, bacon, eggs, sausages and mushrooms in seperate pans so you can check flame pictures and gas rate :)

Nice leg of lamb in the oven, slow roast to check the stat bi-pass...mmmmmmmmmmmmm!! :D

hi mk swans, ive always been told that 0.0000 to 0.0040 is acceptable, 0.0040 to 0.0080 means boiler needs attention and 0.0080 is find problem or turn off appliance, but as previously stated check your decimals

You don't want to just look at the ratio anyway. What if there is a air leak and the excess air is diluting the products to give you a satisfactory result? efficiency will go up as a result. Always look at the full picture.

use FGA as last option (for your piece of mind), you need to do all necessary checks first, tightness, gas rate, flame pic, pressures etc..

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses (well, some) haha

I thought I read in the Engineer mag the other month that when doing gas certs it was now mandatory to complete FGA on cookers and fires... Will re-read them tonight... :book:

Oh well

Thanks

If you do your working pressures and still are good and dont have any other appliance affecting say the boiler.

That should tell you straight away that your gas rate is going to be good

Once you stop the boiler and only say have the cooker on, if the flame picture boosts then it shows that the boiler is starving other appliances therefore need to look at pipe sizing correctly

How long do you guys leave an appliance running before taking a co/co2 ratio?

you should do it at max setting after 10 mins, however appliances may vary, so you should check MI

Exactly what galaxy said, good practice if you dont have manufacturer instructions is to leave on for 10mins :)

On my apprenticeship I got told to bang in the FGA straight away I noticed on the printed copy of the FGA it said flue temp like 35 degrees, thought this isn't right...

Thanks
