Hi i have to tap a feed from one of thease ive never worked with one before whats the best way to do this regards of drain down and were to tap in the room that needs a hot supply is next door and the gate valve on the side of the tank is seized.
Thanks to all inadvance.

I would personnaly recommend getting a plumber in. It is quite complicated to explain and there are a lot of different factors as to where you can tap into it. The hot is normally on the top but i do not have experience of fortic tanks so i could not offer any advice except, get a plumber in.

there should be a drian off valve at the bottom somewhere, connect a hose to that (with the other end outside or in a toilet), Switch water off, either by the tank or to the whole house, Switch boiler off and open drain off valve.

If no drain off valve, then you can turn boiler off, turn water off and open hot and cold taps and this will drain it all down. I would open all taps just to make sure there is no water left in pipes.

If you have a drain off valve, this is the best option as it drains it all and prevents any risk of water coming out.

The pipe should go across and down, the best bet is to take the tapping off of the bit that goes down.

1-switch it off
2-isolate cold feed to tank
3-open hot tap till tank is empty
4-break into dhw hot feed and do what u need to do!
5-Fill cold tank
no need to drain full cylinder once tank is empty your sorted.

Replace faulty gate valve 1st-u can isolate then but no need to drain full system, drain valve will probably be goosed anyway

Personally I would never advice any body who has little or no plumbing experience to work on a system which is half full. If it all goes wrong, he will be stuck. And also the fact that it is easy to forget that there is still water in some of the system and cut through the wrong pipe. Easier to completely drain down. Unless you know what you are doing.

Thanks all yet again yove put my mind at rest and now feal confident to do the job I do a bit off plumbing mostly self taught and gaining info of people like yourselfs,
Im going to drain down HW via taps as explaind above then carefully undo the compression on the faulty gate valve and if all good replace it and tap in below it the two main things i was concernd about were efecting the ch sytem and were the best place to tap into the hw pipe was, If this is all possible wich it sounds as though it is then great.
If anyone has any more thoughts to ad please do.
To all that have taken the time to reply a big thank you.
